I FEEL DECEIVED! I took Effexor XR for 5 years from December 2001 - December 2006 with an 8 month break in the middle. I was told there were no side effects and that there were no withdrawal symptoms. WRONG!! Here's what happened: MY FIRST DOSE - ANXIETY In 2001 I started having panic attacks and felt my anxiety was controlling me and that it would ultimately destroy me. My doctor at the time (who I liked very much and still do) gave me Effexor XR to help calm the anxiety and to help me feel safe and in control of my life again. I asked what the side effects were and he quickly and confidently replied, "there are no side effects." Let me first say this: When you are expecting side effects you may not like them but at least you know what to expect. But when you don't expect anything and then all of a sudden ... more WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS I had the pleasure of experiencing Effexor's delightful withdrawal symptoms (or as they call it 'discontinuation symptoms' - doesn't sound as harsh does it?) twice! This is the side effect of effexor that most people have a BIG problem with. Most of us were never told that significant weight gain is possible and does occur when taking this medication. I am someone who was never overweight, has always been very active and could eat whatever I wanted to. But ... more THE LAST WORD I didn't put up this site to attack or to bash effexor and SSRI's in general. I put it up because I was frustrated with the lack of information I recieved which made the side effects I experienced worse. Worse not in physical intensity but psychologically.
